Northgate Eye Care is an independent, technology-driven optometry practice focused on preventative eye care, early disease detection, and personalised visual solutions.

Unlike many traditional eye examinations that focus primarily on updating a glasses prescription, their approach emphasises understanding the underlying causes of visual symptoms and identifying eye health concerns before they affect vision.

A core principle of their practice is what they call the 3-6-12 Philosophy. Many eye conditions cannot be diagnosed from a single examination and instead require monitoring over time. Depending on the level of risk, they may recommend reviews at 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month intervals to establish baselines, detect progression, and intervene early when necessary. This philosophy underpins our approach to glaucoma, myopia progression, dry eye disease, keratoconus, retinal disease, and many other conditions where early detection can help preserve vision.

Their practice utilises advanced technology including OCT retinal imaging, axial length biometry, corneal topography, wavefront aberrometry, glaucoma imaging, dry eye diagnostics, and Rodenstock DNEye biometric scanning technology.

Even when no significant concerns are identified, they generally recommend a comprehensive eye examination every 12 months. Annual reviews allow them to monitor for subtle changes that may otherwise go unnoticed, including early glaucoma, cataracts, retinal disease, dry eye disease, digital eye strain, and changes in visual function.

They believe that a little care today can go a long way toward protecting your vision tomorrow. By identifying small problems early, patients can often avoid more complex, invasive, or costly treatments in the future while maintaining comfortable vision and healthy eyes throughout life.

Their practice has invested in advanced diagnostic technology including OCT retinal imaging, axial length biometry, corneal topography, dry eye diagnostics, wavefront aberrometry, DNEye biometric scanning technology, glaucoma imaging, and advanced ocular surface assessment tools. These technologies support the early detection and monitoring of conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, keratoconus, childhood myopia progression, cataracts, dry eye disease, and binocular vision disorders.

Provide the Best Vision Possible Today While Helping Safeguard Vision for the Future

At Northgate Eye Care, they practise sustainable optometry. They charge professional fees for the clinical services, expertise, technology, and time they provide. This allows them to remain independent and continue investing in advanced equipment, staff training, and patient care pathways that support long-term eye health.

Their goal is to be here for their patients whenever they need them—not simply when they need a new pair of glasses. By supporting a sustainable model of eye care, they can continue providing comprehensive, preventative, and technology-driven optometry for our community for many years to come.

Patients regularly travel from across metropolitan Adelaide and regional South Australia seeking a more comprehensive and preventative approach to eye care.

Areas of Clinical Interest

Dry Eye Disease & Ocular Surface Care

They provide comprehensive dry eye assessment and management, including Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), Low-Level Light Therapy (Red Light Therapy), Demodex management, meibomian gland dysfunction treatment, eyelid hygiene programs, and ongoing dry eye coaching. Their goal is to identify and address the underlying causes of dry eye disease rather than simply managing symptoms.

Childhood Myopia Management

They offer evidence-based myopia management including axial length monitoring, specialised myopia control spectacle lenses, orthokeratology (Ortho-K), specialty contact lenses where appropriate, and the newly introduced EyeRising Repeated Low-Level Red Light (RLRL) Therapy. Their focus is on identifying children at risk early, monitoring eye growth over time, and helping reduce the long-term risk of vision-threatening complications associated with progressive myopia.

Advanced Lens Technology

They prescribe advanced spectacle lenses tailored to individual visual needs, including Biometric Intelligent Glasses (B.I.G. Exact) lenses personalised using thousands of measurements from the visual system. We also offer the Australian-made Optilux lens range, incorporating wavefront aberrometry technology to create highly personalised visual solutions designed to optimise clarity, comfort, and visual performance.

Specialty Contact Lenses & Keratoconus Care

They provide specialty contact lens services on a case-by-case basis, including scleral lenses, rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, orthokeratology, and advanced contact lens solutions for complex visual needs.

They also have a particular interest in keratoconus screening and monitoring using advanced corneal topography technology. Early detection is particularly important in children, young adults, and patients with chronic eye rubbing or allergy, where intervention and monitoring may help preserve vision.

Glaucoma Risk Assessment & Monitoring

They provide advanced glaucoma risk assessment and monitoring using Optopol OCT technology. Their focus is on identifying risk factors early and monitoring for subtle structural changes over time.

Importantly, most patients diagnosed with glaucoma have eye pressures within the normal range, meaning pressure alone is often not enough to identify risk. Establishing a baseline OCT scan of the optic nerve is one of the most valuable ways to assess future glaucoma risk and detect change before noticeable vision loss occurs.

Binocular Vision & Visual Comfort Assessment

They assess eye teaming, focusing, and visual comfort problems that may contribute to headaches, eyestrain, reading difficulties, computer fatigue, and reduced visual efficiency.

This includes the assessment and management of convergence insufficiency, accommodative dysfunction, digital eye strain, and prescribing task-specific visual solutions. Where appropriate, they may offer vision therapy pathways or collaborate with orthoptists and other allied health professionals.

Light Sensitivity, Migraine & Medical Lens Tints

They assess patients experiencing photophobia, migraine-related visual symptoms, post-concussion light sensitivity, and environmental light sensitivity.

Treatment options may include specialised medical lens tints and Avulux migraine lenses designed to reduce visual discomfort and improve day-to-day visual function for suitable patients.

Occupational, Safety & Shooting Eyewear

They provide task-specific visual solutions for work, sport, and recreation, including prescription safety eyewear, shooting glasses, computer lenses, occupational lenses, and specialised visual solutions designed around individual workplace and lifestyle requirements.

Complex Visual Problems

Patients are often referred to them when glasses are no longer performing as expected, prescriptions seem to change frequently, vision remains blurred despite new glasses, or adaptation to multifocal lenses has been unsuccessful.

Theri diagnostic approach combines advanced imaging, wavefront analysis, binocular vision assessment, and customised lens solutions to identify contributing factors that may otherwise be overlooked.

Retinal Disease, Diabetes & Preventative Eye Care

They provide ongoing monitoring and management support for retinal disease, diabetes-related eye disease, macular degeneration, cataracts, and other sight-threatening conditions, with a strong emphasis on establishing baselines and monitoring for change over time.
